Life expectancy infographicPM22 for GM Poverty ActionHealth

Greater Manchester is home to significant health inequalities. The way these inequalities intersect with poverty has been highlighted throughout the pandemic. This page details life and healthy life expectancy in each of Greater Manchester’s boroughs for males and females and life expectancy at birth by middle super output area (MSOA).

We would encourage users interested in this theme to explore the Marmot Review of Greater Manchester. More detailed public health profiles can be accessed here.

Life expectancy and healthy life expectancy by local authority

The following chart plots healthy life expectancy and life expectancy for local authority areas in England against their deprivation score. The Greater Manchester boroughs are shown as orange dots. The chart shows that both healthy life expectancy and life expectancy correlate with deprivation. The higher the deprivation in an area the more likely people are to have a limited healthy life expectancy (i.e. How long they can expect to live in ‘good’ health) and to die young.

There is variation in healthy life expectancy and life expectancy across Greater Manchester. Life expectancy is highest for both men and women in Trafford, and lowest for both men and women in Manchester. Both men and women can expect to live longer in ‘good’ health in Trafford than anywhere else in Greater Manchester. Salford has the lowest healthy life expectancy for women in Greater Manchester, and Oldham has the lowest for men.

Life expectancy by MSOA

This map shows life expectancy at birth by Middle Super Output Area (MSOA). There are significant disparities across Greater Manchester and within boroughs.

The area with the longest life expectancy for women in Greater Manchester is Castlefield and Deansgate in Manchester (93.2 years). The area with the shortest life expectancy for women in Greater Manchester is Brinnington in Stockport (75.2 years). For men, Dunscar and Egerton in Bolton has the longest life expectancy (85.2 years) and Harpurhey and South Monsall the shortest in Manchester (69.4 years).
